About the subject

The basics of chemical thermodynamics allow us to determine in which direction chemical processes will go, under what conditions they will occur spontaneously, and how favorable they are in terms of energy. the subject, basic concepts and laws of chemical thermodynamics are studied. concepts of thermodynamic system, environment, internal energy, heat, work, enthalpy, entropy and gibbs free energy are explained. the essence of the i, II and III laws of thermodynamics, energy transformations in chemical processes, thermal effects, conditions for spontaneous reactions and their relation to equilibrium are considered. as a result of mastering the subject, students acquire the ability to analyze the energetics of chemical reactions, make calculations using thermodynamic quantities, and apply the laws of thermodynamics to the explanation of chemical processes.

Topic plan

  1. 1.
    1. the subject of chemical thermodynamics. laws of thermodynamics - i law of thermodynamicsLecture

Chemical thermodynamics is a major branch of physical chemistry that studies energy transformations, thermal effects, and equilibrium states of systems during chemical processes. the laws of thermodynamics determine the general regularities of energy exchange and provide conditions for evaluating the possibility of chemical reactions. the first law of thermodynamics is based on the law of conservation of energy and states that the heat given to a system is spent on the change of internal energy and the work done by the system.

    • 1. explains the subject and basic concepts of chemical thermodynamics, distinguishes types of thermodynamic systems and their characteristics.
    • 2. interprets the first law of thermodynamics, explains the relationship between the concepts of internal energy, heat and work, and applies the energy balance equation.
