About the subject

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) course covers the fundamental principles of the design, integration, and implementation of IoT systems in industrial environments. Within the scope of the course, students study the architecture and key components of Industrial IoT systems, as well as the operating principles of sensors and actuators and their integration into industrial systems. The course examines networking and communication technologies used in industrial environments, together with IoT communication protocols and platforms, their characteristics, and application areas. Students acquire knowledge and practical skills in data acquisition and transmission from sensors, establishing device-to-device communication using various communication protocols, and processing data through edge computing and cloud-based technologies. The practical component of the course emphasizes the development of sensor- and actuator-based systems, the application of industrial communication technologies and protocols, and the implementation of Industrial IoT solutions. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to analyze Industrial IoT systems within the context of the Industry 4.0 paradigm, select appropriate communication technologies and protocols, and design and implement basic Industrial IoT solutions.

Course learning outcomes (CLO)

  1. CLO 1: Explain the concepts of the internet of things (iot), industrial internet of things (iiot), and industry 4.0, including their key components, functional characteristics, and interrelationships. analyze the role of iiot systems in the digitalization and transformation of industrial processes.

  2. CLO 2: Describe the architecture and core components of industrial internet of things systems, as well as the viewpoints of the industrial internet reference architecture (iira). identify the functional components and appropriate architectural approaches for different industrial application scenarios.

  3. CLO 3: Explain the operating principles, classifications, and technical characteristics of sensors, actuators, embedded systems, and microcontrollers. select appropriate sensors and actuators based on industrial application requirements, and develop basic iot applications using platforms such as arduino and raspberry pi.

  4. CLO 4: Describe the wired and wireless communication technologies and the channel, network/internet, transport, and application layer protocols used in iot and iiot systems. compare and evaluate communication technologies and protocols—including rfid, nfc, ble, wi-fi, cellular networks, IEEE 802.15.4, ipv6, 6lowpan, rpl, thread, zigbee, z-wave, lorawan, udp, mqtt, and coap—and select appropriate solutions according to application requirements.

  5. CLO 5: Explain the role, architecture, and key functions of edge computing and cloud computing in iiot systems. describe the principles of sensor data acquisition, transmission, real-time processing, and integration with iot platforms, and analyze different data processing approaches according to application requirements.

  6. CLO 6: Explain the major security vulnerabilities, cyberattacks, security mechanisms, and industrial cybersecurity standards relevant to iiot systems. design, implement, and technically justify a basic iiot solution by appropriately selecting and integrating components such as sensors, actuators, communication technologies, protocols, and edge or cloud computing platforms.

Topic plan

  1. 1.
Introduction to the internet of things, industrial internet of things, and industry 4.0Lecture

This topic examines the impact of digitalization on the transformation of industrial systems and covers the conceptual foundations of the internet of things (iot) and the industrial internet of things (iiot). it explains the core components and functional characteristics of iot systems, as well as the distinguishing features and industrial applications of iiot systems. the topic also reviews the key standards associated with iiot and explores its role within the context of industry 4.0. furthermore, it examines the historical evolution of the industry 4.0 concept, its key technological pillars, and its relationship with iiot. in addition, the current state of iiot and industry 4.0 implementation in azerbaijan, including existing practices and future development prospects, is analyzed.

  2. 2.
Architecture of industrial internet of things systemsLecture

This topic covers the architectural structure of industrial internet of things (iiot) systems and their fundamental design principles. it explains the purpose, structure, and role of the industrial internet reference architecture (iira) in the design and development of iiot systems. the business, usage, functional, and implementation viewpoints defined within the IIRA framework, together with their interrelationships, are examined. based on the functional point of view, the core functional domains and components of iiot systems are studied. in addition, the topic analyzes architectural patterns used in various industrial applications and their implementation characteristics.

  3. 3.
    Sensors and measurement technologiesLecture

This topic covers the sensors and measurement technologies used to acquire data from physical processes in industrial internet of things (iiot) systems. it explains the fundamental principles of the measurement process, the factors affecting measurement quality, and the role of metrology in industrial systems. sensors are classified according to the physical quantities they measure, their operating principles, and their output signal types. the technical and functional characteristics of various sensor types are examined. in addition, the principles for selecting appropriate sensors for specific industrial applications are studied based on criteria such as accuracy, sensitivity, measurement range, response time, and operating environment.
